Work will involve repairing the bridge deck and joints to ensure the structure is safe for continued use and will take place at night to reduce the impact to the community.
“Nowra Bridge is an important thoroughfare not just for the local community but also for tourists and freight operators,” a RMS spokesperson said.
“Due to the high volumes of traffic using the bridge each day, work will take place at night.”
The upcoming night work is planned for three weeks from Sunday, May 6 to Thursday, May 24, weather permitting.
Work hours will be between 8pm and 6am, Sundays to Thursdays.
“To allow work to be carried out safely on the old Nowra Bridge, traffic will be able to cross the Shoalhaven River by travelling on the concrete northbound bridge via contra-flow traffic arrangements,” the spokesperson said.
“A reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place on the northbound bridge and delays are expected, so motorists are asked to plan their journey and allow extra travel time.”
The spokesperson said the new Nowra Bridge is being developed due to the increasing and ongoing maintenance needs of the iron ‘whipple’ truss bridge, which is more than 137 years old.
“The community will continue to be kept informed about the project and this upcoming essential maintenance work.”
