It’s the chance for the students to immerse themselves in a unique style of learning by volunteering in Berry over the weekend.
The Big Lift has decided to continue the ‘little lifts’ program this year after its great success in 2017. ‘
The little lifts program offers students the chance to give back to communities over shorter, more frequent weekend trips.
Founded on the philosophy of ‘paying it forward’, The Big Lift is a student-run volunteer organisation that offers students the opportunity to jump on board a bus throughout regional Australia and complete various volunteering projects.
These have included painting, gardening, cleaning and simple construction tasks.
With a focus on community engagement, The Big Lift works closely with towns to provide help where it is most needed.
UTS Student and Communications Director of The Big Lift, Rachel Nordon, said the Berry event should be a good one.
“What we hope to achieve with our Little Lifts program is to show our students the value in being an active member of the community as well as the importance of being kind and supportive to those in need,” Ms Nordon said.
“What I love about these trips is that a little effort really pays off and when we come together for such a great cause, real change can be achieved.”
The bus will be visiting Berry to help Berry Landcare with tree planting, weeding and other gardening tasks.
The 20 students will arrive on Friday (April 27), in the evening, and return home on Sunday, April 29.
President of The Big Lift, Lucy Day-Williams, said the volunteers were ready to work.
“I’ve seen so many students do great things for their community after being inspired by the volunteering projects they participated in on past trips,” Ms Day-Williams said.
“In a generation that has every potential to become positively connected with the world, The Big Lift plays an essential role in building that sense of community.
“The Big Lift aims to help create global citizens that are socially conscious and empowered to be a part of things they want to see changed.”
The Big Lift is sponsored by the University of Technology Sydney (Student Services Unit, Faculty of Health, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), Activate UTS, ResMed, LendLease and Construction Services.
