The game promised to be a cracker, with the two teams being very evenly matched last season and the high scoring affair that resulted didn't disappoint.
The Mariners were unable to trouble the scorer in the first inning and were immediately on the back foot after pitcher Brenton McMahon conceded 3 early hits and hit 2 batters. The Pirates were able to take the early lead 4-0 by the end of the first.
The 2nd inning would see a Mariners fightback as they scored 3 runs however the Pirates would score 4 runs of their own to retain the ascendancy.
After scoring an additional run and holding the Pirates to nil in the 3rd inning the Mariners bats fired in the 4th inning scoring a whopping 8 runs in an epic fightback. The Mariners however, would only carry a one run lead into the fifth and last inning after a Keiran Harris home run would score 3 for the Pirates.
In a nail-biting finish the Mariners were unable to add to the score in the 5th inning however the Pirates were able to add the tying run with two outs as a base runner from second base was able to score on an infield hit to shortstop. The final score was 12-12.
The best of the Mariners hitters was Michael Vine who went 3 from 3 with a double and Eden Kelly who went 2 from 3.
