Firstly on Saturday, the cubs took care of business against the Bathurst Goldminers, winning 97-85 at the Tigers Den.
The hosts started the match on a 10-0 run, which saw them lead 24-13 at the end of the first.
The lead was extended to 12 at the main break, behind the strong play of guards Josh Watts, Brayden Morris and Luke Smith.
The third quarter was all Tigers, as they ran the break to perfection while getting stops on the defensive end.
Riley O’Shannessy and Bruce Ozolins starred for the term, as the Tigers went into the final term up 18.
The final term saw coach Scott Blasar use his bench players, including Matt Morrissey, Tim Balzer and James Macdonald – to run out winners 97-85 against last season’s grand finalists.
O’Shannessy (29 points) finished as the team’s top scorer, with Ozolins and Watts both finishing with 12.
“This was a real good win – it was in the balance at times and it was extremely important that we keep our home record intact,” Balsar said.
“We knew it was going to be a good battle but we rose to the occasion, handled the adversity and got the job done.
“We have multiple guys in double figures each game, which proves we aren’t relying on one or two guys to get our wins.”
The cubs backed up their win on Saturday with another one at home against the Hornsby Spiders on Sunday.
The Tigers were in control for the majority of this match, after getting a spray from Balsar at quarter-time – only being up 26-23 at the time.
After that point, the Tigers put the foot on the throat and cruised to a 101-75 win – extending their winning streak to six.
“Hornsby are a well-coached team by my good friend Richard Gooderham, who I spent time in the US with on a coach education tour,” Balsar said.
“The result wouldn’t indicate that they were much competition but believe me, they really stretched and pushed our team.”
On Sunday, Bruce Ozolins top scored with 22, while O’Shannessy (18), Brendan Sampson (12), Kyle Leslie (10) and Morris (10) all reached double figures.
Balsar’s troops will now turn their attentions to the weekend’s road double-header.
The Tigers will first take on the Newcastle Hunters from 1pm Saturday at Broadmeadows Stadium before facing the Central Coast Waves at 10am Sunday at the Central Coast Youth Club.
