Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen Men
Wonderful autumn weather had everyone out on the Greens. Wednesday saw 32 players enjoying a warm, clear afternoon with a cooling zephyr from the South East. Four games of Social Triples and 2 games of Social Pairs were contested. A clear, warm afternoon on Saturday saw 15 players enjoying 2 games of Mixed Social Triples as well as 1 game of Pairs. The 4’s had a bye while the 6’s were away to Culburra. On Sunday the 4’s played Mollymook at home and the 6’s played Berry at Berry.
Wednesday 4th April was a fine, hot afternoon where the fast paced greens were great to play on. Rink 9 Steve Hollington, Alan Rose and Harry Pearce played superb bowls to overcome their opposition by 25 shots to 14. Rink 10 held the game of the week. Norm Schulz, John Newbold and Don Salway jumped the start with a fantastic 4 followed by a thrilling three to be up 8/zip on the 3rd end. Paul Takac, Graham Eyre and Les Stuart replied the best way possible, by winning the next 3 ends to be trailing by only 6 shots to 8 on the 6th end. Paul, Graham and Les settled into the zone and had tied the game on the 11th end at 11 all and then moved ahead to be 2 shots in lead. Norm, John and Don dug deeply and a fabulous 5 had them back in the lead by 20 to 15 on the 17th end. There they stayed as Paul, Graham and Les clawed their way back to tie the game on the 21st end forcing a playoff. It was anyone’s game from here. A golden point would win it! Norm Schulz, John Newbold and Don Salway kept their concentration and won the end and the game by a shot. What a marvellous comeback! Rink 11 was another interesting game, Bert Watson, David Solomon and Ray Solway were just too good for their opposition and thrashed them by 23 shots to 14. Rink 12 in a low scoring game, Ian Abberley and Peter Smith emerging as the victors at 17 to 11 shots. Rink 13 held the next game of Pairs, Paul Goddard and Graham Mills played outstanding bowls to annihilate their opposition and win by 28 shots to 7. Rink 14 saw an excellent game of Triples with Allan Furniss, Tommy Smith and John MAC playing incredible bowls to bring home the bacon by 22 to 14 shots. Saturday 7th April was clear, warm, autumn afternoon with a light, SE breeze. The Green was rolling at a medium pace. 4’s had a bye. 6’s V’s Culburra at Culburra. 6’s: Alessandro Lattanzio’s team played magnificent bowls to overcome Culburra by 27 shots to 10. Dooley Gould’s team romp home by 27 to 15 shots. Ray Solway’s team were triumphant by 23 to 14 shots. Therefore Shoalhaven Ex-Servo’s won the day by 77 to 39 shots scoring 10 to 0 points. Congratulations to all players. Rink 3 In the first Mixed Triples game, Ray Joyce, Stella Tucker and Bronwyn Perkins combined superbly to outsmart their opposition by 20 to 14 shots. Rink 5 viewed the last game of Mixed Triples where Greg Morphett (swinger), Les Stuart and Peter Smith played magnificently to come from behind and just got home by 21 shots to 19. Rink 7 held the game of Pairs where Paul Goddard and Tim McCormack played outstanding bowls to slaughter their opponents by 25 to 7 shots. Sunday 8th April. Another glorious autumn day. The green was at medium pace and a light breeze cooled the players. 4’s played Mollymook at home while the 6’s played Berry at Berry. 4’s: David Milne’s team played well but went down on the last end by 16 to 17 shots. Harry Pearce’s team played brilliant bowls to bring home the bacon by 23 shots to 16. Tim McCormack’s team played well but Mollymook were just too good and won by 13 to 23 shots. Therefore the day was won by Mollymook, 56 to 52 gaining them 9 points to 1. Well done to all participants. 6’s: Alessandro Lattanzio’s team played magnificent bowls to overcome Berry by 18 shots to 15. Dooley Gould’s team romp home by 23 to 14 shots. Ray Solway’s team were outplayed by Berry by 15 to 28 shots. Therefore Berry won the day by 57 to 56 shots scoring 8 to 2 points.

South Coast District
Winners of the District Open Fours 2018. Bomaderry Lady Bowlers, June Murrell, Dale McLachlan, Judith Croft, Elaine Kimpton. The First Round was held at Bomaderry with Elaine’s team winning against Kay Gray, Helen Chapman, Donna Humphries, Valmae Melrose from Lake Conjola. Elaine Kimton’s team had a win against Margaret Allen, Ann Brandley, Kerrie Jarvis, Patricia Moy from Mollymook. Elaine’s team defeated Carol Turton, June Jones, Gail Scott, Nancye Carre from Culburra in the Semi Final.The Final was held at Culburra in a very contested game between June Murrell, Dale McLachlan, Judith Croft and skip Elaine Kimpton with a tight score, winning the game against Marilyn O’Day, Patricia Bailey, Helen Neilsen and skip Kristi Buckley. District President Ann Brandley invited her ladies to afternoon tea, Lorraine Foster made lovely sandwiches. President Ann presented the Runners up with their Certificates and money then President Ann presented the winners June Murrel, Dale McLachlan, Judith Croft, Elaine Kimpton with their winning badges and prize money. Thank you to the umpire and controlling body for the giving of their time.
Culburra Women
Our Pennant season is getting close to finishing with only a few games left for our Grade 3 and Grade 4 teams. Grade 4 had a win over Berry and then a loss to Milton Ulladulla last week, and have their final game this week. Good luck ladies in your last game against Nowra. Grade 3 also had a mixed week , with a win over Huskisson and then a loss to Ex Servos. With four games left, we wish you all the best in your final games of the season. Three teams from Culburra enjoyed the annual Six-a-side event at Currarong recently. Everyone had a wonderful time celebrating 30 years of this great tournament, and it was great to see our ladies not only winning a number of raffle prizes, but also team June Jones, Ruth Joannou, Gail Scott, Sandra Annetts, Thelma Cooley and Margaret Hindley (from St Georges Basin) take out overall 4th place, and team Robyn Herbert, Trish Bailey, Carol Turton, Helen Neilsen, Sue Stevenson (from Greenwell Point) and Nancye Carre take out overall 3rd place. Thank you to Currarong for a wonderful 2 days, and we look forward to taking part again next year.
Amongst all of this, our Social ladies turned out in good numbers and the winners of the day were Trish Bailey, Eileen Hunter, June Jones and Gail Scott over Carol Turton, Marilyn O’Day, Helen Neilsen and Sandra Annetts, Anne Dwyer (swinger) Thelma Cooley and Lorraine Epple over Anne Dwyer, Ruby Salmon and Joy Hanneman, and Betty Oldfield, Jenny Anderson and Lynne McKee over Elaine Turner, Trish Tom and Narrelle Wetsteyn.

Callala
It was a big weekend for both grades of the Callala pennant teams. In gusty conditions, Saturday, April 7, Callala hosted Currarong in their round 6 game in Grade 5. The game was close with the lead changing several times. Eddie Semovente, Barry Schey, Bob Fowler and Anthony Fisher were defeated by Bill Caulfield, David Tinsley, D Gentles and Bob Wood 15 – 29, in a hard fought game. Paul Mitchell, Patrick Ford, Richard Khader and Craig Taylor defeated Dennis Richardson, Graham Hulbert, Bill Benson and R Harnett, 28 – 11. Pauli Kennedy, Col Neighbour, Dennis Beazley and Grant Ridges defeated Marenos Van Brokenhoven, L Perkins, Garry Gordon and Jamie Wayside, 29 – 17. Callala picked up 9 points for the round.
The Grade 7’s travelled to Huskisson for their round 6 game but were not so lucky. Terry Castle, Steve Robertson, Marty Gehrke and Chris Harbrow defeated R Drew, T Mulligan, W Woodside and M Hassall 32 – 15. Jon Lee, Dion Gadd, Glenn Brindle and Ron Wilkinson were defeated by V Neilsen, B Mahoney, F Atkinson and P Salvair, 29 -9. Steve Bowerman Steve Blackley, Dennis Lynch and Phill Bowerman went down 4 shots to S Greenland, N Bishell, E Hussein and H Croft, 13 – 17. Callala did win 1 point.
Backing up on Sunday was difficult. The grade 5’s travelled to St Georges Basin for their round 7 match. Not a good day for Callala going down 71 – 59. Eddie Semovente, Barry Schey, Bob Fowler and Anthony Fisher missed out by 3 shots to K Hook, J Player, N Hurching and G Donovan, 23 – 20. Dennis Beazley, Pat Ford, Richard Khader and Craig Taylor went down by 4 shots to J Meehan, B Kriksiounis, A Rhoden and J Dunn, 25 – 21. Tery Castle, Col Neighbour, Nick Fowler and Grandt Ridges were defeated by J Purvis, D MacKenzie, S Goldsmith and M Sheridan, 18 – 23.
The Grade 7’s travelled to Sussex RSL for their round 7 match and were also unlucky not to pick up a point. Norm Delaney, Howard Duncn, Marty Gehrke and Chris Harbrow were defeated by A Sigsworth, L Murray, J Ribbi and A Littlewood 28 – 12. Jon Lee, Dion Gadd, Glenn Brindle, Ron Wilkinson were narrowly defeated by P Bailey, K Moloney, R Selby and P Wood 19 – 17. Steve Bowerman, Steve Blackley, Dennis Lynch and Phill Bowerman were defeated by W Whybrow, R Jones, A Mason and T Walson, 28 +- 14.
The first round of the Women’s Major Singles was set down to be played yesterday, Tuesday, April 10. Results next week.
Berry Men
A further match in the Clubs Major Singles has seen John Payne take David Badger to 27 ends with a score of 31-13 in David's favour. Additional matches have been delayed due to Pennant commitments.
Social bowls on Wednesday 4th April saw Barry Dunn and Laurie Watson after being tied defeat Peter Haddon and Derek Raymond on a count back and Brian Povey and Col Good score six shots on the last two ends to defeat David Armstrong and Tom Froggatt. In a triples match that went to 29 ends Russell Tulloch, David Lambert and David Badger out last Lindsay McNamara, Phil Chittick and Terry Hayes.
Berry is hosting the first match for the 2018 Triangular Cup against Shoalhaven Heads and Gerringong on Wednesday 18th April.

Our blue ribbon event the Club Major Singles final has been played with Scott Mathieson winning over Colin Baker. Both players have been club singles champions before so it was no fluke to see them in the final. Col put up a good fight but it was Scott’s day, congratulations Scott.
Last Wednesday was our Jackpot day which is usually well supported by players from other clubs as well as our own. The major jackpot didn’t go off so lets keep our fingers crossed for next month, it could be you. We have the interclub competition (pennants) going on at the moment. While the results are often mixed in our 3rd grade team the 2nd grade is leading the competition. We have our Annual Carnival Coming up so put it on your calendar now! (Sunday the 3rd of June to the 7th of June 2018) We always make this a successful and social event like in the previous years. The total prize money is huge $4500. It’s only $10 per person per event to enter. THURSDAY 12/04/18 - MIDWEEK MOUNTAIN BIKE RIDE: WOOLLAMIA TO VINCENTIA RETURN; / Moderate pace / Medium difficulty / Uses Cyclepaths / Some traffic / Sealed and unsealed roads and bush tracks / mountain bike required. The ride will start at 8:00am from the Woollamia boat ramp carpark, Frank Lewis Way Woollamia, cycling to Vincentia via the Woollamia Nature Reserve and Jervis Bay National Park to reach Vincentia for coffee and a swim if hot. SUNDAY 15/04/18 - THIRROUL TO KIAMA; 60 km / Moderate pace / Medium difficulty / Some Traffic / Uses Off-road Cyclepaths / Uses On-road Cycleways. Please call to confirm participation. This is one of our most popular rides starting at 9:00am from the Thirroul railway station. If coming from the south, catch the 7:49am train from Kiama to Thirroul, arrives at Thirroul 8:51am (check the time table). Ride back to Kiama. There are coffee and lunch stops along the way. People wanting a shorter ride can catch the train to and from Dunmore railway station instead of Kiama. You miss some hills doing this but you also miss some great scenery. Peter (02) 4446 0119.
