Illawarra Shoalhaven Partners in Recovery (ISPIR), a service for people with severe and persistent mental health issues run by Grand Pacific Health, is running a free surf therapy program for their clients.
“Waves of Wellness’ is held every Wednesday afternoon from 2- 4pm and will run until March 28.
Grand Pacific Health’s NDIS Transition Coordinator, Alan Beadnell, said the program is facilitated by surfing and ocean awareness professionals, trained in mental health, occupational therapy and social work.
“This unique learn-to-surf program is designed for people experiencing mental health issues, facilitating functional recovery, while promoting social inclusion, engagement and quality of life,” he said.
“It promotes the benefit of physical health in mental health recovery- within a natural, non-threatening environment.”
“Through involvement in this program, participants also gain the opportunity to learn how to use surfing as a coping strategy for their mental health.
Waves of Wellness exists in eight locations around Australia, however this is the first time it has been offered in the Shoalhaven.
A GPH Mental Health Peer Worker attends each session to ensure the comfort and safety of all participants.
