Last Saturday the Jervis Bay Fishcare Team got together with members of Interchange, a disability support service, for a fish off the floating wharves at Nowra on the Shoalhaven River. A great time was had by all and everyone caught a fish, including some nice bream. It’s always very rewarding working with persons with disability and it makes everyone’s day when a big fish is landed and released.

Easter eggs appearing in stores are usually a pretty good reminder that it’s coming into one of the best times to fish for snapper on the South Coast. March through to the end of May is a gun time to target snapper on both lures and bait. When it comes to soft plastic lures for snapper there have been plenty on the market that do the job well, including Z-Man and Berkeley Gulps in the Jerk Shad patterns, but the newest soft plastic lure in the Pro Lure range called the Prey Minnow is fast becoming a must have for those anglers who like to target snapper on lures.
The Prey Minnow’s baitfish profile is slick, streamlined and has a natural presentation, which no doubt the snapper and other predators love. The Prey Minnow comes in sizes 3 to 7 and also a variety of great colours, which mimic the natural colours of bait fish. The range selection covers most species on the South Coast, including kingfish, snapper, flathead, bream and bass. The 80mm Prey Minnow in the Brown Bass or Ghost colour look the goods for targeting estuary perch and bream in the Shoalhaven River.
The 105mm Prey Minnow in the Fluro Shad, Pearl Sardine or Emerald coloured fished on a 1/4 once jig head in shallow water are going to do the job over the next couple of months as we move into prime snapper time. If you are going to fish deeper for snapper try a Prey Minnow in the 160mm range using a 3/8 once jig. However when fishing these new lures use as light a weight possible to maintain a natural action while still reaching the depth of bait of structure. A retrieve that uses twitches of the rod tip will have the tail flicking and the lure darting from side to side, this will tempt a big snapper to strike.

Fishos are always willing to get behind a good cause and the annual Pirtek Fishing Challenge is a great example of this. Taking place across Australia on Sunday, March 18, the Pirtek Fishing Challenge is celebrating its 10th anniversary, boasting $210,000 in cash and prizes this year.
Your $25 entry fee this year includes a 10th-year limited edition cap, brag mat and sticker and puts you into the draw for some great prizes, including a boat package. It’s Australia’s biggest fishing challenge, supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and Peter Duncan Neuroscience Research Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital.
In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men. In 2017, there were an estimated 3453 deaths caused by prostate cancer, accounting for almost 13% of all cancer deaths in Australian men. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is a broad-based community organisation and the peak national body for prostate cancer in Australia. It is dedicated to reducing the impact of prostate cancer on Australian men, their partners and families, recognising the diversity of the Australian community.
The Peter Duncan Neurosciences Research Unit at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney has recently been lauded as the number one Neuroscience Research facility in Australia. Their goal is to find and apply new neuroscience techniques for patients suffering from diseases such as Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease, Alzheimer’s and other neurological infections and stroke. Proceeds from the Pirtek Fishing Challenge will be split between these two leading medical research organisations.
