Vika is well known to Australian audiences as one half of the soulful Bull Sisters and has performed for Nelson Mandela and the the king of Tonga and performed with Billy Joel, Paul Kelly and Iggy Pop, to name a few.
Growing up she always wanted to be a singer.
“The moment I realised I would make it was when we were recording with Joe Camilleri and we recorded Chained to the Wheel,” Vika said.
Joe became somewhat of a mentor to both her and her sister, Linda.
“Joe took us around the world, him and Paul Kelly are two people in the industry that have looked after us, given us advice and made sure we got to sing lead as well as backing vocals.”
At 52, people in the industry have continually remarked on how she is improving with age.
“It comes down to having the life experience to interpret the song and sing it with depth and feeling,” she said.
As a performer she has enjoyed many incredible moments but the one that stands out is when she got to perform for Nelson Mandela.
One of the first songs that really touched Vika was hearing Aretha Franklin sing ‘Natural Woman’ on the radio, not knowing that Carole King had written it.
Vika and Debra Byrne along with The Brill Band, featuring some of Australia’s finest musicians, reimagine the songs of the most successful and revered female songwriter in pop music history in Tapestry.
Both artists have been inspired by the work of Carole King and have joined forces to pay tribute to this incredible artist.
