Shoalhaven Ex-Servicemen Men
A very humid week of bowls resulted in a struggle for all bowlers to keep their concentration. Wednesday was an overcast muggy afternoon with no breeze that created a sauna on the green. 32 players battled through 18 ends with 2 game of Social Triples and 5 games of Social Pairs. Saturday saw a humid afternoon with a light E cooling breeze. 32 players enjoyed 1 game of Mixed Social Triples and three, first round matches of the Club Four’s Championship.
Wednesday 24th January the refurbished green was rolling at a slow pace.
Rink 8 held the first game of Triples. This was a hard fought game with Greg Morphett, Bert Watson and Graham Mills playing wonderful bowls to come home the winners at 19 shots to 15.
Rink 9 In the other game of triples, Les Stuart, Pat Leach and Harry Pearce had to fight hard to just hold onto the lead from a fast finishing opposition by 19 to 18 shots
Rink 10 In the first game of Pairs, Tommy Smith and Roy Cartledge were in the zone and trounced the opposition by 25 shots to 9.
Rink 11 The opposition found it tough to pick the feel of the green and were demolished by Alan Furniss and Trevor Wright by 20 to 8 shots.
Rink 12 Saw an excellent game of bowls Michael Hill and John Edwards played brilliantly to win by 17 shots to 10.
Rink 13 In a closer game, Gary Way and Alessandro Lattanzio played superb bowls in their elegant win by 20 to 15 shots.
Rink 14 The last game of the day was a beauty, Rob Ray and Dooley Gould played magnificent bowls in overcoming their opponents by 20 shots to 10.
Draw Results: 1st Prize Rink 8 Greg Morphett, Bert Watson and Graham Mills. 2nd Prize Rink 11 Alan Furniss and Trevor Wright. 3rd Prize Rink 10 Tommy Smith and Roy Cartledge. 1st Spin Rink 13 Gary Way and Alessandro Lattanzio Not Won. 2nd Spin Rink 14 Rob Ray and Dooley Gould Not Won. Players Draw: Bert Watson.
Saturday 27th January was a muggy afternoon, although the cooling Easterly breeze allowed us to complete all matches. The Green was rolling at a medium pace.
Rink 8 held the Mixed Social Triples game with Julie Buchanan, Alan Morrissey and Ray Solway starting well then loosing concentration till they finished with six shots on the last end to win the game by 19 shots to 17.
Rink 9 This held the first of our Club Four’s Championship matches. In a very tight scoring match, as only 27 shots were scored in 21 ends, Les Stuart, Ian Abberley, Graham Mills and John Black triumphed over David Solomon, Tommy Smith, Alan Furniss and Eddy Lee by 15 to 12 shots.
Rink 11 The match of the week was the second Club Four’s match. Gary Trautsch, Neil Miller, Alan Rose and John Edwards jumped away to a great start with a fantastic 3 and then a 1 shot end on the first two ends. Gary Way, John Newbold, Peter Smith and Alessandro Lattanzio hit back with a fantastic three of their own, to be behind by 6 shots to 9 on the 8th end. This gave them the confidence to slowly, one shot at a time, take the lead for the first time on the 14th end at 12 shots to 10. Not to be outdone. Gary, Neil, Alan and John bowled a superb set of ends to lead by 18 shots to 12 on the 19th end. Gary, John, Peter and Alessandro dug deeply and found the previous form to take the next 2 ends and be only 3 shots behind, starting the 21st end. Could they find another fantastic three to draw the match or a 4 to win? NO, a 2 by them was not enough to steal the match from the winners, Gary Trautsch, Neil Miller, Alan Rose and John Edwards by 18 shots to 17. That was a great Championship match by both teams. Thanks mates.
Rink 13 In the last championship match for the day, Steve Hollington (subbing for Rob Ray), Paul Takac, Tim McCormack and Dave Milne played outstanding bowls to defeat Michael Hill, Peter Shield, Dan Salway and Harry Pearce by 33 to 10 shots.
Draw Results: 1st Prize Rink 9 Les Stuart, Ian Abberley, Graham Mills and John Black. 2nd Prize Rink 11 Gary Trautsch, Neil Miller, Alan Rose and John Edwards. 3rd Prize Rink 8 Julie Buchanan, Alan Morrissey and Ray Solway. Players Draw: Peter Smith.

Culburra Women
Although last week saw some cooler days with light drizzle, that didn’t dampen the Major Singles quarter final and semi-finals games.
All four games in the quarter final were well played with the following coming out the winners - Gail Scott over Sandra Annetts, Kim Rudd over Nancye Carre, Eileen Hunter over Lorraine Epple, and Helen Neilsen over Marilyn O’Day.
Our Social ladies also braved the conditions, with Trish Tom and Jean Eagleton having a win over Anne Dwyer and Ruth Joannou, and Narrelle Wetsteyn, Joy Hanneman and Anne McCauley having a win over Maree Guilfoyle, Ruby Salmon and Judy Watson.
Light rain fell for most of the semi-final games, making conditions tricky for all players. Well done to Helen Neilsen over Kim Rudd, and Gail Scott over Eileen Hunter. We look forward to the final this week and wish both Helen and Gail good luck.
Social winners last Thursday were Trish Tom (swinger), Diane Dawes, Ruby Salmon and Elaine Turner over Trish Tom (swinger), Marea Challender, Thelma Cooley and Lorraine Epple.
Callala
Tuesday January 23, the ladies only managed to play 8 ends before rain forced them to abandon the game. Better luck next week for the first round of the Minor Singles.
The men’s social bowlers Port Seekers, welcomed 23 players from Warilla Sporties social bowlers on Sunday, January 28, to contest the “Piston Broke Trophy”. In very hot conditions, two games of fours and five games of triples were played. Callala defeated Warilla 125 – 80, winning five rinks to two. Warilla handed over the trophy to Callala for the next three months. The first round of the Major Singles is set down to start next Saturday.
Berry Men
Members and visitors are reminded that the new telephone number on which to make bookings is 0475 768 249 and that Wednesday social bowls during February will be played at 4.00 pm with bookings in by 3.00 pm.
Berry thank Culburra Club for partaking in a trial Pennant match on Saturday 27th and for fitting in with the change of time to start play. In Grade 2 only three sides played with victory to Berry and in the Grade 6 the four rinks were equally divided between the two clubs.
Social play on Wednesday 24th experienced very humid conditions. Pairs matches of note included Phil Chittick and Mark Power taking a one bowl victory over Geoff Lidbetter and Terry Hayes after being tied at end 20.Bob Dunn and David Lambert after a scoring spree mid game went on to take their match from Russell Tulloch and Peter Webb. The triples match of the day saw Arch Mackinnon, Tom Froggatt and Barry Dunn jump to an eight shot lead at end three and this was the margin that they ended up beating Peter Haddon . Lindsay McNamara and David Armstrong by.
