Metropolitan Crash Investigation Unit manager Inspector Katie Orr said the 39-year-old Ulladulla man crossed onto the wrong side of the road and collided with a Sydney family’s white Subaru Forester.
The 36-year-old mother, who was in the front passenger seat of the car, died following the crash.
Her husband, 36, who was driving the car, was flown to St George Hospital, where he remains in a serious condition after surgery.
Their five-year-old son was airlifted to Sydney Children’s Hospital with facial injuries. He remained there in a critical condition on Friday morning.
The Volvo was in the eastbound lane while the Subaru was travelling west when they collided near Frogs Holla sports ground, shortly before 4pm in a 60 km/h roadwork zone.
The driver of the Volvo was taken to Milton Ulladulla Hospital for observation and mandatory blood and urine tests. Insp Orr said he had since been taken to St George Hospital for treatment of “superficial injuries”.
