Then, a viewing area at the memorial was opened in honour of the sub-branch’s first president Ron Sheldon.
When he first moved to Culburra in 1980, there was no local sub branch, so he joined a number of veterans to open the group in the early 2000’s.
From 1939 to 1945, Ron served in World War II, in the Royal Marine Commandos involved in conflicts in South East Asia, Malaya and Burma.
“It’s a good little sub branch, I’m proud to be a member,” he said.
“It’s fantastic to be part of a small community and to get to know everybody.
“I was president at the time when we all got together and built this (memorial.)”
A couple of fallen veterans from the sub branch who passed away this year were remembered at the service – Lenny Steer and Ritchie Baxter.
