Poultry enthusiast Mark Miller received a big surprise on his daily egg collection recently. 

Nestled amongst the normal sized eggs was a whopping 120 gram egg.

“I was so surprised to find one that big,” Mark said. 

“When you compare it with the others it’s at least three times the size.”

With eight Isa Browns, one Leghorn chicken and a black Australorp in the coop, Mark isn’t sure who the culprit is but suspects it could be ‘Lilly Leghorn’.

While he’s not sure if it’s a local record, an internet search revealed Lilly may have to keep trying if she wants to beat an English and European chook however. 

“My wife had a bit of a research and in England there was a 350 gram egg and in Europe a chook laid a 454 gram egg,” Mark said. 

Sadly the effort proved too great and the chook died afterwards.

“It would have been like backing out a freight train,” Mark said. 

Mark’s chooks have a healthy diet of laying mash, pellets and grass, with a possible secret weapon thrown in there. 

“I throw them a couple of handfuls of uncooked brown rice a day,” he said. 

“I don’t know if that’s it but it can’t hurt.”
