“I do love everything about my job,” she said.
“The fact that every day is different, the Shoalhaven is a great place to work and live, and I have such great staff.”
Carmel was the first female graduate from civil engineering at the Institute of Technology, now UTS.
“I absolutely had to prove myself,” she said.
“You take a few hits along the way, so I did other degrees, developed my career, and now I’m saying to younger engineers and women, if you find something you love, stick to it.”
She’s thankful for two “once in a career” opportunities that have landed on her desk; Porters Creek dam, and REMS Scheme Shoalhaven, a water recycling scheme.
It’s not without its trials.
“The day before I started I read the local paper, and the front page said, ‘Council shuts down oyster industry due to a sewer spill,’ and I said to my husband, ‘well I think I know what I’ll be doing on my first day,’” Carmel said.
“I’ve had experiences like that along the way, we work really hard to ensure we’re more proactive now, you really want to work with communities and do good things for local businesses.”
