Jervis Bay Village residents told to stay put

Residents of Jervis Bay Village are being urged to seek shelter as an out of control bushfire approaches the village from Summercloud Bay.

The Rural Fire service has issued an emergency warning over the fire which appeared to have been deliberately lit at multiple locations at 5am Thursday morning.

RFS says the bushfire in the vicinity of Summercloud Bay Road, south of Jervis Bay is out of control and is moving north towards the JB village.

The fire is burning in the area of Wreck Bay Road and spreading in a northerly direction towards the village. Residents are being advised to stay put as the fire has crossed Wreck Bay Road and is heading towards Jervis Bay Road and Jervis Bay Village. The fire has reached the Jervis Bay Airfield.

Jervis Bay Road and Wreck Bay Road are closed.

The fire is moving swiftly through coastal heath and throwing up a large column of smoke.

If you are in the area of Jervis Bay Village, seek shelter as the fire arrives. Protect yourself from the heat of the fire.

Jervis Bay general store Damian Erwich said most people in the village had been out keeping a close eye on the fire.

“We’ve had some light rain and the wind is a bit calmer,” he said.

“We were a bit apprehensive but we’ve had firefighters here since Monday. So we’re not too fussed.”

RFS is advising to check and follow your Bush Fire Survival Plan. If you do not have a plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes. Leaving early is your safest option.

Firefighters and aircraft are working to slow the spread of the fire and crews are stationed in Jervis Bay Village.

Emergency alert telephone warnings have been sent to people in the area.

The large air tanker Thor is being deployed to the area.
