A small group from the South Coast Shotokan Karate club did just that by attending the Shotokan Karate International Australia Winter Kangeiko (training camp) in Sydney recently.
Senior Instructor David Rush, Assistant Instructor Amanda Baker and club member Alex Rush attended the weekend training camp at the Sydney Academy of Sport, Narrabeen training under 8th Dan Black Belt and International Chief Instructor Shuseki Shihan Manabu Murakami and all three came home with a deeper knowledge and appreciation for their art.
Shihan Murakami began karate at the age of 9 and has been practising karate for over 42 years most of which has been under the tutelage of Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa, 10th Dan Black Belt and founder of Shotokan Karate International Federation (SKIF).
Shihan Murakami travels all over the world teaching karate to hundreds of thousands of people and has also previously won eight world karate championship titles.
Together, Shihan Murakami and Kancho Nobuaki Kanazawa (Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa’s eldest son), run SKIF worldwide.
“Although I have trained many times with Shihan Murakami, I always learn something new from him,” David Rush said. “He is an exceptional karate teacher who takes time to explain techniques in a way that everyone can understand.
“He still trains and gains karate knowledge directly from Soke Hirokazu Kanazawa, who is regarded as the world’s best Shotokan Karate technician and the only living 10th Dan Black Belt Grand Master of the International Martial Arts Federation.”
Soke Kanazawa is also the only living karate student of Master Gichin Funakoshi who introduced karate to the world and who is widely regarded as The Father of Modern Karate.
“We are grateful to have this kind of karate pedigree and high standard of training which we regularly receive twice a year from karate masters like Shihan Murakami,” David said.
“We are the only club on the South Coast to have direct and regular training under highly experienced karate instructors including Shihan Murakami and Soke Kanazawa.”
Assistant Instructor, Amanda Baker, explained “it was inspiring to see Shihan Murakami work directly and effectively with the children, guiding them to deliver stronger, faster and more effective kicks, punches and blocks. He is truly an inspiring karate teacher and very good with children.”
South Coast Shotokan Karate welcomes new members and run classes for kids, teens and adults. Contact David Rush on 0418 977 402 or visit: www.shotokankarate.com.au for details.
