After being selected in the squad following last year’s Australian All Schools championships, 17-year-old scored four goals and dished up seven assists during the nine-game tour.
“During the tour, we won three games, defeating England Independent Schools 4-1, Republic of Ireland 2-nil and Shropshire schools 2-nil,” Trew said.
“During the Republic of Ireland game, I was awarded man of the match, which I was stoked about.
“We then drew matches with Northern Ireland (1-all) and Scotland (3-all) before losing games to Bristol Academy (2-1), Wales Colleges (2-1), Wales Schools (2-1) and England Schools (6-2).”
Trew, who started most of the matches while on tour, was over the moon to have been part of this team.
”Being able to pull on the green and gold colours of Australia and represent my country is something that I didn’t take lightly and am extremely proud of,” he said.
”It’s something that now I’ve got a taste of it, I want to do it again.
”Having the chance of playing with my mates against some of the top players my age in Europe was the highlight of the trip.”
While Trew has played at the top level in Australia, he enjoyed the challenge of playing against different styles of football while in the UK.
“The opponents were quite tough and it was a bit of a different style of game in terms of physicality and the way they pass the ball around then we are used to in this country,” he said.
“I thought in most games we matched them well and I learnt a lot from playing against that style – which should only benefit me in the future.”
Since returning, the Vincentia High School student is now preparing for a big season with the Wollongong Wolves.
“Next for me on the football field is to just keep on improving and scoring goals with the under 20s Wolves,” he said.
“I also hope to break into the first grade team this season and get as many minutes for them as possible for them.”
Trew and his under 20s Wolves side will open their 2017 this Saturday, when they travel to Parramatta to take on the Parramatta Melita Eagles Football Club.
