From the front Doug Black’s home looks like any other on the street- out the back however it’s a different story.

The North Nowra resident has turned his back yard into a sprawling vegetable patch and regularly donates corn to the soup kitchen and McClelland Lodge.
With cricket now starting up again, the soup kitchen will be forced to shut shop at the Nowra Showground until February and organisers are hoping to find another location.
Sue Hill and Shannon Chittick run the soup kitchen every Friday, with volunteer cook Herbert helping out.
“The soup kitchen is so much more than just a soup kitchen- people tell us this is the one time of the week they can socialise and they really look forward to it,” Herbert said.
“It’s really important for a lot of people and we’re hoping to find another spot.”
“We’re also looking for food donations, all food at the soup kitchen is donated.”
Doug said the soup kitchen has been a source of comfort for him.
“I’m an introvert by nature but you’ve got to get out of the house and I feel really comfortable up there,” he said.
The soup kitchen runs every Friday from 11am at the Nowra Showground. Anyone who can provide another location or offers of food donations is encouraged to contact Sue Hill on 04 3533 6195 or Shannon Chittick on 04 1452 1404.
Complete with tomatoes, chokos, spinach and more, Doug said his garden is his passion.
“It’s everything I’ve got and I enjoy donating the veges,” he said.
“Sometimes I’ll see some poor unsuspecting soul walking past and I’ll just give them a bag of corn.”
