Mrs Hancock was nominated by Premier Mike Baird and that nomination unanimously supported in the party room, which is still meeting.
Her nomination will be put to the vote in the Legislative Assembly when parliament resumes.
Meanwhile, Gareth Ward has been promoted to parliamentary secretary to the Premier, with special responsibilities to the Illawarra and South Coast.
He assumes responsibilities for the former Minister for the Illawarra position, which was held by John Ajaka but has been abolished.
"It is enormous privilege to serve the community, where I grew up, went to school, live and worked my entire life," Mr Ward said.
"My first and foremost responsibility will always be to my electorate but I look forward to serving the wider region and ensuring they have a strong voice in government."
Illawarra Business Chamber chief executive officer Debra Murphy congratulated Mr Ward.
“With a strong understanding of the vital role the business community plays in the health of our local economy, Mr Ward has worked alongside the IBC to support growth across the region. On behalf of the IBC Board and our 1260 members, we congratulate Mr Ward and wish him all the best in his new role,” Ms Murphy said.
“I have great confidence he will continue to be a deeply passionate and driven advocate for the Illawarra and South Coast community.
“Mr Ward has been very successful in getting much-need infrastructure investments in the region including the $550 million Albion Park Rail Bypass and I look forward to seeing what he can achieve for the entire region in his new role.
“I firmly believe the redefined Parliamentary Secretary role will provide the platform for our region to achieve improved economic growth and prosperity.
“I would also like to acknowledge the Hon. John Ajaka’s tireless contribution to the region during his time as Minister for the Illawarra. Working alongside Minister Ajaka we have seen commitments to many of the causes the IBC has championed.
“We look forward to the continued support of Mr Ward for the growth of the region,” Ms Murphy said.
