Kiama MP Gareth Ward has put up a $500 prize for the winner to encourage students to be involved.
“The topic is the centenary of Anzac and its importance to our country,” he said.
“This week marks the beginning of centenary of Anzac commemorations and I am proud to give our future leaders the opportunity to express the importance of the centenary and what the Anzac legend means to our country.
“There are many talented young people across our region and I look forward to receiving many high quality entries,” Mr Ward said.
An independent panel of three returned servicemen and RSL representatives will judge the entries.
The competition is open to students aged 16 to 18.
The essays should be no longer than 1500 words.
The competition opens on Monday, August 11 and closes on Friday, September 19.
