Crews from both the Nowra and Shoalhaven brigades were called to a grass fire adjacent to Stockland shopping centre.
Smoke billowed from the grassed hill area overlooking the Nowra High School playing fields shortly after 11.30am.
Nowra station officer Greg Bathurst said it was lucky the wind was blowing from the west and away from the nearby shopping centre.
“Kikuyu grass fires produced plenty of smoke and this area was pretty dense,” he said.
Fire crews have been called to the location on a number of occasions over the past few weeks after fires have been lit in bushland and grass in the area.
Crews remained at the location for at least half an hour to ensure the fire, which was smouldering in the long grass, was blacked out.
It was the second call out for crews, having attended a house fire in Hale Avenue, Nowra shortly after 10am.
