All money raised was to be donated to The Cancer Council.
Following the sad loss of her mother in February, 2013, Skye Roberts did not just grieve, she decided to do something in pursuit of helping the fight to find a cure for this nasty and often fatal disease.
Along with her family, she embarked on the only way they can help the fight, raisING funds for research.
A consequence of Skye’s initiative culminated in the Gerringong Men’s Club with an annual Team Roberts Relay for Life Bowls Day as a funds-raiser, with all money raised on the day going to The Cancer Council.
For the second year running, Gerringong Bowling Club men’s president Merv Lillye walked all the hard yards, knocking on a lot of businesses doors looking for sponsorship and donations.
He secured 48 sponsors resulting in an abundance of prizes where everyone ended up a winner.
Merv, who is also the South Coast District Bowls Association vice president said the SCDBA takes great interest in these community events and is proud of the bowling fraternity to be involved in the fight of this nasty disease.
In a show of generosity, club bowler Leon Tranby, winner of the raffle first prize, donated it back to the fund-raiser.
This was followed by other cash prize winners doing likewise.
Overall, $2814 was raised for the Cancer Council.
Aside from the success of the fund-raiser, it was a truly wonderful day for bowls and club camaraderie.
The day’s proceedings ended with a moving thank you by Skye and Cliff Roberts on behalf of the Roberts family.
Last Saturday saw the end of the 2014 pennants season for Gerringong with the No. 2 team having a bye and the No. 6 team winning 5–1 at Shoalhaven Heads. Despite the bitterly cold conditions at the Heads, the game was played in true sportsmanship manner, although everyone was glad to return to the clubhouse for some warmth and a convivial drink.
