Until now, police officers who served up until October 30, 2008 were not eligible for the medal, often meaning years of dedicated service ignored.
The National Police Service Medal was established in 2010, replacing the Police Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, which ended in 1975.
But the cut-off date for the new medal was October 2008.
About 20,000 police officers missed out on recognition by being caught in the middle of these two awards.
The federal government has rectified this with former police officers who served their communities for 15 years or more between February 14, 1975 and October 30, 2008 now considered for the distinguished medal.
