IT was not much of a weekend for fishing in the Shoalhaven with southerly winds, squalling rain showers and a bumpy swell from all directions.

But there was still that group of keen fishos willing to head out in pretty much any conditions just to get their fishing fix for the week.
Reports include bass in the Shoalhaven River, bream, whiting and jewies on the beach, and squid in Jervis Bay.
As predicted the rain from a couple of weeks back has pushed an early run of bass down the Shoalhaven River.
The bass seem to be concentrated between the ski park up to Crams Rock just at the bottom of Longreach.
They are still sitting quite high in the water column and are still hitting the surface with gusto, which is quite unusual for this time of year.
Bream, whiting and a few jewfish are the talk of the beaches and fresh or live beach worms are a must for the best results possible.
They are readily available on most of our beaches, if you are good enough to catch.
For those not good enough to catch them with the fingers, the Alvey worming pliers make a hard, frustrating job a lot easier.
Now you have your fresh bait, it is time to catch some of these big autumn bream and whiting, and who knows, maybe even a jewfish if you are lucky.
The beaches to try include Seven Mile, Comerong Island and the beach between Kinghorne Point and Hammerhead Reef down Currarong way.
A high tide on dusk or dawn usually gives best results, with some of the low tide unfishable gutters becoming fishable as they fill with water.
A lot of fishos make the mistake of trying to cast out as far as possible on the beach and sometimes casting right over the fishable water, landing their bait on a shallow sandbank where no fish would ever think of swimming.
Jervis Bay is still producing plenty of squid, with the south side around Murrays being the popular location offering a bit of shelter from the southerly wind.
The hot tip on colours for this week is anything dark, green, blue, or natural.

Remember, whatever you do in life, do it well.
Johnny out.
