Despite all the recent rain and the greasy conditions, the ground held up really well with both teams hard at the contest and desperate to make an early impression.
As the scoreboard shows, the Tigers made the most of their opportunities in the first quarter while the ball was still relatively dry to set up a handy 29 point lead at the first break despite some errant kicking in front of goal.
The second term was a lot tougher with both teams finding it really hard to score as the respective backlines stood up to the test, proving extremely hard to penetrate.
The third quarter proved to be Bomaderry’s most productive with the Tigers kicking five goals while holding Nowra scoreless.
Although the sting went out of the game a little in the final term as bodies appeared to tire and the conditions started to get the better of everyone, it was nevertheless a good four quarter effort and a great way to kick start the season.
Based on Pudge’s comments afterwards, it was clear he was fairly happy in that the team played four quarters, were well structured, and managed to stick to the game plan.
He also signalled out the backline for their efforts in restricting the opposition to just two goals and providing plenty of rebound and run off half-back and was particularly pleased with the tackles, smothers, shepherds and 1 percenters, especially given the conditions.
It is only one game and there is still a lot of hard work ahead, but the fact that everyone was committed to the contest and that it was a team win, is what pleased him most.
The only negative comment was that the Tigers gave away a couple of 50 metre penalties, which is a bit disappointing and something that needs to be addressed.
The club would like to congratulate and welcome Sam Dunell, Thomas Edgar, Matthew Wyles, James Lees, Jack Hangan and Jimmy Nicoll.
It was also great to see Sean Byrne, Brent Herdman and Bradley Graham return after a few years absence.
This week the Tigers travel to Port Kembla to take on take on Port in both grades at Kully Bay Oval.
Reserve grade starts at 12.15am, followed by first grade at 2.10pm.
Players are required to be at the ground at least one hour before their scheduled game, so do not be late.
Reserve grade will depart the clubrooms at 10.15am and first grade at 11.15am. While we appreciate some of you have other commitments, it would be nice if both teams could try to be there to support each other and help out on the sidelines where needed.
