AND let there be rain, said someone somewhere in the history books I’m sure.

With over 100 millimetres of rain falling in the Nowra/Shoalhaven area since the weekend, the fishing will almost certainly change from what it has been in the Shoalhaven river systems in past weeks.
Hopefully the influx of fresh water will coax some bait into moving around the system and the run of a few jewies over the past couple of weeks will turn into a full blown autumn run, with plenty of fish spreading right throughout the river eager to take a well presented lure or live bait.
The rain should also trigger that early run of estuary perch I talked about in previous articles, and we may even see an early run of bass moving downstream if the rain continues to fall in the upper catchment areas.
Rainfall around St Georges Basin can also trigger some exciting fishing this time of year as too much freshwater in this low tidal influenced system, especially Cockcrow and Wandandian creeks, push big black bream out into the main basin.
With the water still warm enough in the shallows, they hunt along the edges looking for a feed that has been washed in by the rain.
Drains, small creeks and pretty well anywhere where there is water running into the basin is a good spot to try, with small minnows or soft plastic lures tossed around these areas producing fish.
Jervis Bay is still producing some nice snapper for bait fishos around Plantation Point and Longnose bombie.
A whole pilsener on a set of 4/0 gangs lightly weighted and drifted down a berley trail is a hard bait for the reds to resist, but they sometimes do.
If they do then try going to a single fresh squid tentacle on about a 3/0-4/0 suicide or circle style hook unweighted and see how this goes.
There are still plenty of squid throughout the bay for those looking for both a feed and some good fresh snapper or jewfish baits.
Marlin stories are coming in thick and fast from offshore with Saturday at the banks being one of those epic days you just should not have missed.
I heard stories of over 30 fish hooked and plenty more sighted as the banks turned into a parking lot for just about every boat on the ocean.
The Jamison family of father Greg and sons Guy and Ryan made it a family affair and were right among the action.
They managed a trio of marlin, boating one each for the day.
The shelf is still producing a few fish as well with Gavin and the crew of Captain Cranky managing two marlin on Sunday.
Be sure to ask Gavin the ins and outs of handling small marlin at the side of the boat next time you are in the shop.
You can catch up with the shop on Facebook at McCallums Tackle World Nowra or call into the shop for the latest in fishing information.
Remember that whatever you do in life, do it well.
