Police said the incident happened around 9.15pm when Irma Crawford was reversing her vehicle down the driveway in Mackay Street.
Police believe she was reversing the vehicle with the door open, when the driver’s door hit a post.
The vehicle suffered damage to the door and the woman was unable to close the door but continued reversing.
Police suspect the woman, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, might have been reversing too quickly and was thrown from the vehicle.
It is believed the woman’s head hit the roadway and the car continued backwards down the road for around 20 metres before colliding with a neighbour’s fence.
She was treated at the scene by ambulance paramedics and taken to Shoalhaven District Hospital with extensive head injuries but later died.
Police said there are no suspicious circumstances regarding the accident but are appealing for witnesses into the accident.
