The ride began in 2009 as one man’s trip to raise awareness of depression. It evolved into a national movement involving thousands of motorcycle riders who have raised more than $1 million for mental health services.
Jeff Rosser from Mollymook rode in a previous event in Canberra. It was so successful he is hoping to host a Black Dog Ride in the Shoalhaven.
“At the moment we have eight riders and two pillions but I would be happy if we could get 50 riders,” Mr Rosser said.
He is no stranger to mental illness and the impact it can have on family and friends.
“I’ve got friends who have committed suicide and I know a lot of people who suffer depression.
“I have lived with depression myself after being diagnosed with cancer.”
Mr Rosser said he hoped to organise a representative from Lifeline to come on the day to discuss issues with the group.
The riders will meet at Shoalhaven City Council car park in Nowra at 10am to depart at 11.15am. The destination is Mackay Park in Batemans Bay by about 12.30pm.
Lions will be cooking lunch at the park.
To sign up for the ride phone Mr Rosser on 0414 258 383 or email southcoastblackdog ride@hotmail.com. For more information visit https://1dayer2014.eventbrite.com.au.
