About 12.15am Saturday morning, a 20-year-old man was walking in a supermarket car park in Morton Parade, when he was approached by four males, who asked for a cigarette.
The man refused and they all became involved in a verbal argument.
The 20-year-old man ran away and the men followed him and assaulted him.
He ran away again and managed to hide in a nearby unit.
Police from Shoalhaven Local Area Command attended and saw the man had a large cut on his buttocks.
He believed he had been assaulted with a small axe.
The man was taken to Shoalhaven District Hospital for treatment.
There is no description of the males available at this time.
