Emergency services attended Osborne Street at about 1pm where they found a home on fire.
The man’s wife, aged in her 90s was unaccounted.
The woman’s body was located a short time ago.
A rescue helicopter landed at the nearby Michael Cronin Oval and the man was airlifted to Royal North Shore Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Nearly 30 firefighters attended the scene with neighbours reporting seeing windows and parts of the roof exploding.
Police from Lake Illawarra Local Area Command established a crime scene at the property and started inquiries into the fire.
A report will be prepared for the coroner.
