Shaun Patrick O’Neill, 29, of Blackmore Close was arrested by police on Sunday evening and appeared in Nowra Local Court on Tuesday, charged with stealing from a person.
Police alleged that on Wednesday, February 5 at 2pm O’Neill removed a purse from a woman’s handbag in a trolley while in The Reject Shop in Nowra Mall.
Facts tendered to the court said O’Neill ran from the store, pursued by staff members who were unable to catch him.
He allegedly ran towards O’Keefe Avenue, where he threw the purse away, and kept running.
The purse was later found at that location.
Following inquiries, police attended a home in Nowra about 7.40pm on Sunday evening where they arrested O’Neill.
He was taken to Nowra Police station where during an interview he made full admissions, saying, “I needed money”.
He was refused bail to appear in Nowra Local Court on Monday, with the matter adjourned until Tuesday.
He appeared before Magistrate Dr Gabriel Fleming who sentenced him to six months’ jail.
