Manager of the United Petroleum Log Cabin at Tomerong Sonny Luthra said a motorist pulled into the service station at about 3.47pm on Monday and filled up a large tank on the back of a trailer.
“This is a record and definitely one we didn’t want,” Mr Luthra said.
“Drive-offs are an ongoing problem, we probably lose between $40 and $70 a week.
“Prior to this the most we had ever lost in one drive-off was between $100 and $150.”
CCTV footage captured the driver and vehicle. The footage has been supplied to the police who are investigating the theft.
The man was wearing a fluoro work shirt and was driving a red four-wheel drive utility with a canopy, while towing a matching coloured trailer and tank.
While the company is insured it is not covered for drive-offs.
“Our console operator tried to stop him driving off to no avail,” Mr Luthra said.
Anyone with information about the theft can phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page.
