Twenty-four members of the community were nominated for the Shoalhaven Medal which recognises residents who have made an outstanding contribution to the local community or achieved a level of excellence in a particular field of endeavour.
This year’s gold Shoalhaven medal was awarded to long-time volunteer, Violet Lord.
A member of the Nowra East Public School P&C Association for more than 40 years, Mrs Lord has also attended and co-ordinated the Red Cross Good Starts Breakfast Club every school morning for the past decade.
This amazing ongoing commitment to the area’s local schoolchildren saw Mrs Lord recognised with the Red Cross Emma Geelan award and the 2013 NSW Woman of the Year award.
Local volunteers Peter Hewat and Anthony Austin were named as the joint winners of the 2013 silver Shoalhaven medal.
Mr Hewat was recognised for his long association with the Bomaderry Cricket Club where he began playing as a junior before moving into the seniors becoming a coach, umpire and chief ground curator. During this time he also developed the ground sprinkler system and built a new equipment shed.
Mr Hewat also spent 10 years volunteering with the John Purcell House of the St Vincent De Paul Society and has spent time assisting the Nowra Golf Club.
Anthony Austin has been a long-term member of the Mollymook Surf Life Saving Club, having been involved in the movement for more than 40 years.
During this time he has been a board member of the South Coast Lifesaving committee while still volunteering as a branch assessor.
Mr Austin is also a dedicated trainer, having assisted hundreds of volunteers in achieving their surf certificate or bronze medallion.
Stuart Crowther was named recipient of the 2013 bronze Shoalhaven medal.
Mr Crowther has spent the past 25 years volunteering his services to the maintenance and restoration of a number of areas throughout the city including areas of the Shoalhaven River, the Grotto and areas surrounding the Nowra Golf Club.
His ongoing work has resulted in the restoration of a number of public areas through the eradication of exotic weed species, halting river erosion through the germination of native species and the provision of public walkways.
