THE wild weather that hit the region on Tuesday has decimated five endangered Little Tern nests at Lake Wollumboola at Culburra Beach.

NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service staff and a team of volunteers tried to protect the vital breeding sites but the storm surge proved too strong.
The last of the nests were lost on Tuesday.
The nests were elevated on sand mounds and a small number of sand bags were also placed in front of each site to try and protect them.
Ironically it was the same day the first fledgling of the season was recorded further south at Lake Conjola.
Little Terns nest on sand berms so are susceptible to wind, waves and tides and are often also preyed upon by foxes, ravens and dogs.
