GLENN Brandon’s 15 minutes of fame is heading for the million YouTube views mark as his now infamous Bob Hawke beer-skolling clip does the global rounds.
It was a spur of the moment thing, a moment Glenn Brandon from Berry described as “the stars were aligned”.
“How often is Hawkey going to walk past and just take a beer?”
Mr Brandon was with his mates at the Sydney Cricket Ground last Thursday when he handed the former Prime Minister a beer and filmed him skol it.
The whole thing was over in a matter of seconds but it has become a YouTube sensation.
“He was just coming through the crowd and I had just been to the bar,” Mr Brandon said.
“I was right there on the aisle seat, with a full cup of beer.
“The weather was hot, the beer was cold, he took it and it was straight down the hatch.”
The Herald reported the 11 seconds it took the 82-year-old to down the beer as the same amount of time Mr Hawke is said to have taken to drink two-and-a-half pints of beer when he set a world speed drinking record in 1955.
“The whole crowd was cheering and roaring, it was awesome.
“I’m only 28; I don’t really remember him as Prime Minister but Hawkey is a bit of an urban legend.
“After it, we were all high fiving, saying how funny was that?”
On Thursday night Mr Brandon put the vision on YouTube and watched as it slowly grew in popularity.
“I was watching the views, there were 16 views overnight, then I put a link on my Facebook page to the YouTube video.
“I came home the next day and had almost 100 views in the afternoon.
“By Friday night there were 328 views and 2000 comments.
“People were phoning me saying I’ve seen your video on the news.
“Then Saturday morning it had 237,000 views, 550,000 by Sunday and 781,000 Monday afternoon.”
Once the vision started going viral Mr Brandon was contacted over the weekend by The Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian and Win TV, and his vision has been shown on news websites around the world.
“I’m just laughing, you’ve got to get your 15 minutes of fame, it’s crazy, it was all over the news on the weekend and I’ve been getting heaps of phone calls.
“This shows the power of social media.”
