Rod Coupland from St Georges Basin and Cecil (Bob) Morris from Worrigee were awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia in the General Division.
“I feel honoured to the utmost,” Mr Morris said, when he learned he was a recipient of the award.
The men are Korean War veterans, who established the Korean War Veterans Recognition Committee in 2003. The role of the committee was to seek recognition of service for about 5000 of men who served in the Korean War after 1953.
Both were quick to admit that without community backing and the extra support of a few key individuals their seven-year campaign would not have been successful.
“It’s been a heck of a battle that included nine visits to parliament but we’ve only been as good as the people who supported us,” Mr Morris said.
Mr Coupland was also honoured and very proud of what he had helped achieve for the Korean veterans
He received his award for working with the Huskisson Sub-Branch of the RSL.
“I am honoured, but I accept that honour on behalf of all those boys who served from 1953 to 1956 in the Korean War,” Mr Coupland said.
