Former Kiama stuntman Robbie Maddison prefers to defy gravity to celebrate the end of the year.
Thundering down the strip outside the Paris Las Vegas Casino, the 27-year-old charged up a 10-metre ramp to catapult his Yamaha 37-metres, almost vertically, onto a replica of the Arc de Triomphe.
Once Maddison conquered that challenge he went on to free-fall 25-metres onto a landing ramp.
Things have gone wrong for Maddison in the past, he has suffered brain haemorrhages, temporary paralysis, fracture vertebrae, punctured lungs and seizures and this record attempt certainly had the potential for things to go fatally wrong.
However he escaped lightly this time around with a laceration to his left hand, cause by the immense force of the free fall impact, his only injury.
Maddison admits to battling a few mental demons in the lead up to the stunt, explaining that sometimes when he thought about the risks it would make him physically sick.
“It’s definitely a milestone in my life to overcome the fear I had,” a thrilled Maddison said.
“That was definitely the most dangerous jump in my life.
“I just cheated death again.
“I’m ready to live another day and am extremely excited to see what 2009 holds for me.
“The risk level of my jumps was extremely high and although I was confident in my abilities and preparation, I knew there could have been major consequences, but that is what pushing the limits is all about.”
One year ago, Maddison established another motorcycle world record in Las Vegas with a leap of 98-metres over the length of a football field, fans are now left salivating over what Maddison’s next chapter of hair raising stunts will hold.
