It doesn't matter if it's on or off the field, the current Burleigh Bears enforcer is willing do do anything for his friends.
This is no more evident than when the 41-game NRL veteran auctioned off a signed St George Illawarra Dragons jersey to raise money for Beyond Blue - after friend Todd Pike took his own life in April.
"I know how much everyone loves rugby league, so one way to raise funds would be auctioning off a full signed jersey," the former Wests Tigers, Widnes Vikings and Toronto Wolfpack forward said.
"Not everyone has access to get a fully signed jersey and at the same time, help a great cause.
"It was important for me to help because mental health is serious and an aspect people, particularly men, are afraid to talk about - there's a stereotype of how men should act in life.
"Beyond Blue was chosen as Kara Pike (Todd's sister), as she had already begun a fundraiser in light of her brother - I simply wanted to help her achieve her goal (which has seen her raise more than $11,000) in anyway I could."
The auctioned wrapped up at full-time of Saturday's clash between the Dragons and Warriors, with the winning bid of $1700 being made by Michael Martin.
"The $1700 was much more than I originally expected or could have asked for," Buchanan, who played at the same junior club (Culburra Dolphins) as Todd, said.
"When something like this happens in a small town, it rocks everyone and pretty hard.
"I'm so thankful of the support and am glad I could help the Pike family."
