NTB president Murray Ford said it was a tough decision to make.
"It was not a decision we took lightly, as the book sale is a big commitment requiring volunteers from Milton, Kangaroo Valley, Berry and other areas to leave home and or family for considerable amounts of time," Mr Ford said.
"The hall has to be set up over two days, the sale held, then stock culled and stored over a further two days.
"These are ten-hour days and in the current climate (catastrophic fire conditions) it was unreasonable to expect enough volunteers to commit with houses and homes at risk in the region."
Mr Ford said they used various means to get to word out able the sale's postponement.
"You don't call something off at short notice and we made this decision approximately two weeks out so as to relieve any stress caused by the up and coming time commitment," Mr Ford said.
"We used social media, free community billboard facilities and of course word of mouth to notify the public."
Mr Ford knows the community will support the book sale.
"It's interesting to note that we are still getting donations from the public who regard the sale as almost "tradition" and are looking forward to the next sale," he said.
"The NTB will look at holding the sale as soon as practicable but in the meantime, we are focusing on promoting our 140th celebration/concert and building on our training band."
People wanting to donate books can drop them into the Nowra Town Band's hall in Kinghorne Street Monday evenings from 7-9 pm.
