The Currowan Fire blazed its way towards the village on Thursday night and the conditions were terrible.
Lake Tabourie resident Nola and her husband Max took the chance to leave their home on Thursday and came home today (Friday).
Nola was confident their house would be safe.
"The thing I was worried about was the trees falling onto the house and caravan, Nola said.
After talking to a neighbour on Friday morning Nola said they had made the right decision to leave.
"We were told the heat was terrible and when our neighbour heard the roar of the fire he knew it was time to go," Nola said.
Their neighbours stayed away for a few hours and got back as soon as they could.
The good old Colorbond fence acted as a barrier and helped save many homes, including Nola and Max's.
Sadly a joey did not survive the furnace and Max and Nola had to bury it.
Members of the Rural Fire Service were doing mop-up operations around Lake Tabourie at the time.
They speak of facing flames reaching 20-metres high with their trusty hoses.
"You just do it (right the fire) and not think," one RFS member said.
