The St George's Basin man had gotten great joy in past summers watching kids jumping from Moona Moona Bridge, shrieking and laughing.
This year, it was his turn.
"I just saw them and I thought 'I want to be part of that'," he said.
"The first three, I didn't quite get a full revolution for a backflip and landed face-first.
"I kept faceplanting. Then one of the kids said 'hey grandpa, you need to swing your arms more', so I tried that, and it worked."
He turned 75 on Thursday, October 31, and wanted to celebrate being fit and healthy. Mr Slater said he had thought carefully before taking the plunge.
"I'm a game sort of person, but I hope I'm sensible," he said.
"My wife said it could end badly, but I don't see how. I did have a few second thoughts when I got up there.
"The face-plants stung, but I persisted. We have a thing in our family called the cost-to-joy ratio. The cost was the sting on the face, but the joy was worth it."
His two daughters -Denise and Michelle - came home from Broome and New Zealand for the occasion.
"I think he's amazing, and I'm very lucky to have him - but he's a little bit crazy," Denise said.
"I think it's got worse with time too - he's becoming more unique."
