Commerford, fresh off leading the Hockeyroos to the inaugural Pro League final in the Netherlands, is joined in the nominated athletes by fellow Australian hockey player Edwina Bone.
"Being nominated definitely caught me off guard," Commerford said.
"I'm not sure who would have nominated me but I am grateful to be thought of in that high regard."

"It's a huge honour to be considered among this calibre of athletes," the former Ulladulla HIgh School student said.
"Not just for our sporting achievements, but for our workings outside of sport and our interaction with the sporting community in Canberra.
"In one sense, it creates a sense that you're relevant and having an impact on people in a community that helped me be the athlete I am today."
The winner of this prestigious award will be presented at the National Arboretum on Friday, November 29.
"To win this award would provide the opportunity to pay thanks and recognise all those in Canberra who played an integral part in my growth and development," Commerford said.
"A lot of those people, particularly the ones I played with in ACT and worked with in ACTAS, still make up the central part of my support network."
