In Nowra Local Court on Friday, June 12 the now 20-year-old was sentenced to another 20 months in custody

Magistrate Michael Stoddart sentenced Laga to an aggregate term of 20 months with a non-parole period of 15 months after he threatened with a tomahawk a police officer who was attempting to arrest him.

At the time of his arrest, he was also found with a 10-centimetre knife and a quantity of cannabis.

The sentence also relates to a charge of larceny where he allegedly took a wallet containing $1400 from a patron a local hotel.

Court papers said police went to a property in Douglas Street, Nowra at about 12.20pm on June 22 looking for Laga, who was wanted on two outstanding warrants.

Police said Laga was spotted leaving the home and, when he saw police, jumped a nearby fence before running towards the Princes Highway.

With a police officer giving chase, Laga ran across four lanes of traffic and into a vacant block of land where the officer was closing in on him.

Court papers said Laga turned around and faced the officer with a tomahawk in his right hand and adopted an attacking stance

The court heard the senior constable pulled his revolver and yelled for Laga to drop the weapon and get on the ground on a number of occasions before Laga eventually surrendered the weapon.

During a search after his arrest, officers located the knife in a sheath and a quantity of cannabis in a resealable plastic bag.

Laga told police he was allegedly under the influence of methylamphetamine and had the weapons for his "own protection".

In court Laga pleaded guilty to using an offensive weapon to prevent lawful detention, carrying a cutting weapon and possessing a prohibited drug.

He also faced a charge of larceny after allegedly stealing a wallet containing $1400 from a patron at the Bomaderry Hotel on April 22.

The alleged incident was all captured on CCTV footage inside the hotel.

He was arrested by police on May 7.

Laga was previously sentenced to a two-year jail term in 2017 for assault occasioning actual bodily harm and break and entering and another term of 18-months in May last year for break and entering.

He will be eligible for release on February 22, 2021.
