The championships, which will be co-hosted by local Fire and Rescue NSW stations, Berry 224 and Nowra 405, will showcase the skills and expertise a modern firefighter uses every day, be it attacking a fire or responding to a major emergency.

Spectators, who are most welcome at the events, will be given the rare opportunity to see firsthand just how firefighters respond to emergencies.

And there is a lot on the line at the event, which is expected to attract 20 teams, with competitors aiming to qualify for the Australasian Firefighting Championships.

The biannual event where the best teams from across Australia, New Zealand and some of the Pacific Islands compete to be Australasian champions, which this year will be held at Tamworth on October 17-19.

Teams of four compete in 12 events over the two-days of competition.

The championships are one of FRNSW's proudest and longest traditions, running for more than 100 years, with the state-wide competition also open to firefighters from the NSW Rural Fire Service.

Berry firefighter Luke Bramley said the event is shaping up to be huge.

"We will have teams from all over the state and as far away as Tamworth, Armidale and Port Macquarie," he said.

The Southern region stretches from Berry, south all the way down to Eden, with both Berry and Nowra brigades, along with a crew from Ulladulla taking part.

There will also be the opportunity for the public to see some of the latest equipment and tools firefighters have at their disposal.

Special fire detection dogs and investigation crews from Sydney will be present over both days of the event, while there will also be the chance to look over a couple of specialist appliances from Sydney and Wollongong.

Fire and Rescue NSW's Technical Rescue Truck, described as a "whiz bang piece of equipment" from Wollongong will attend on one of the days, as will the heavy Hazmat truck from Shellharbour.

The mobile command centre, a massive bus full of computers and communications devices, which is activated and used during long duration fire events, will also be available for inspection.

One of the zone's newest firefighting tools, drones will also be present over the two days,

Based out of Batemans Bay the drones can be used for a number of applications during firefighting, giving crews an eye in the sky to provide an overall picture of the event at hand.

They can be used to identify hot spots and even in bushfire emergencies.

On the Friday prior to the competition, Berry Public and preschool, along with a couple of other local schools will take part in a engagement event where they will get to look at some of the fire service's equipment.

Winners of a special colouring-in competition which will be run in conjunction with the event will also be announced.

Spectators will also be able to pick up vital fire safety tips which can help you prepare and prevent fires and emergencies before they happen.

It's going to be a massive weekend at the Berry Showground.

The firefighting titles will be held on the large grassed area at the eastern end of the complex, the Berry-Shoalhaven Heads Magpies will host a Group Seven Rugby League match on the Saturday, with the monthly markets on the Sunday.
