Every year Bush Search and Rescue NSW (BSAR), a specialist unit of the NSW State Emergency Service, organises and runs the Australian Emergency Services Wilderness Navigation Shield, or NavShield.
The 2019 event was held on the weekend of June 22-23, within the Kanangra-Boyd National Park, 31 km south of Jenolan Caves.
The event attracts entries from local, interstate and overseas organisations. With over 500 registrations for the 2019 event, the Shoalhaven took out four categories.
Conditions this year featured open but steep country with the mercury dropping below zero overnight. Teams found themselves walking through snow on the Sunday, a first in the 31 year history of NavShield.
Jamberoo/Kangaroo Valley Rural Fire Service was the winner of the Navigation Shield and winner of the RFS sub-category.
Shoalhaven Ambulance Team 1 came in second, and won the Ambulance and Allied Health sub-category.
Nowra-St Georges Basin State Emergency Service won the SES sub-category.
