Steel City Strings joins forces with South Coast Big Band, filling the Nowra School of Arts with classical, blues, jazz and film music. This is a rare experience, as more than 30 musicians perform works specially arranged for this unique combination. Steel City Strings is a chamber orchestra with players from the Illawarra, South Coast and Southern Highlands, and has been delighting regional audiences showcasing the great works for string orchestra and featuring local soloists, choirs and composers. Led by talented multi-instrumentalist Des Cannings, South Coast Big Band is the premier jazz orchestra in the region, with woodwinds, brass, keyboard, rhythm and Gillian Meers' soaring voice. Fern Street Gallery
Gerringong, June 20 - July 7
High profile Sydney, Melbourne and regional NSW abstract artists who have a love for colour are exhibiting their art at the Fern Street Gallery over the next three weeks. The exhibition, "Colour is Key", features eight artists; including Daniela Cristallo, Susan Davies, Nicole Foxall, Libby Mewing, Alexandra Plim, Trenton Shipley, Sally Stokes and Susan Trigg. Meet the artists on Saturday June, 29 from 2pm-4pm where Alexandra Plim and Trenton Shipley will talk about their process and enrich you on their journey so far in their career. Each artist has a unique style with links to landscape, abstract expressionism and a focus on the energy of mark making. The group exhibition runs to July 7. For more information, visit the website.
Rally of the Bay
Batemans Bay, June 29
The Rally of the Bay rightfully has a reputation for the best drivers' roads in New South Wales rallying. As part of the NSW Rally Championship it attracts the state's best car drivers. The Rally will run for six stages along dirt roads and tracks around the Batemans Bay area, including a mammoth 45-kilometre stage through the Bolaro and Mogo State Forests. Racing is expected to start at 9am, and finish after 5pm. Everyone's invited to the ceremonial start on Clyde Street from 8.15am. There will be four spectator points on the day. The Maes
Candelo, June 30
Contemporary folk outfit, The Maes, is comprised of sisters Maggie and Elsie Rigby, who were both side of stage at their first folk festival when they were four weeks old and have been absorbing and exploring folk music since that time. Their latest, self-titled record released earlier this year is a return to the sisters' folk music roots. Gentle, intimate and conversational, the album is an unadorned showcase of the sisters' superb songwriting as well as honest, relaxed and stunning vocal and instrumental performances.
