In the Women's Golf Thursday event sixteen qualifiers took to the course in perfect conditions to contest the coveted Super Six Knockout which was sponsored by Maureen Knaggs. The event was played as a Single Stableford Matchplay initially over 6 holes. After the completion of six holes, the winner of each pair progressed to play a further 6 hole matchplay against another winner from another pair so that after 18 holes two finalists had been determined.Sue Davies and Jill Levi were the successful finalists who then had to battle out a three hole decider. Sue, a relatively newcomer to golf and competition compared to her well seasoned and experienced opponent, was “shaking in her boots” at the thought of having to pit her skills against her golf teacher and mentor Jill. Jill took advantage of Sue’s nerves and won the first hole with a two pointer to Sue’s one pointer.Sue gathered her fortitude and put her head down to take the next hole with a three pointer to level the score. She fought on valiantly, nailing her drive from the tee on the third to unsettle Jill’s concentration. Jill’s new driver let her down and her tee shot failed to make an impression. Another great shot from Sue saw her nearly reach the green and her chip up was close to the pin. Jill made a close putt from off the back of the green after her third shot and the match was down to the wire. Both players holed their putts but Sue had the advantage of handicap and her three pointer out classed Jill’s two points.Jill was gracious in defeat and it was quite obvious that she was proud of her protege. Congratulations Sue – a new pennant player in the making!
The Single Stableford Plate event also sponsored by Maureen Knaggs was played over 18 holes. The winner was Peta Merchant with 38 points, Nancye Massingham put in another great performance to register 37 points on a count back for third by Lorna Knott also on 37 points. The Jackpot on the 16th was won by Peta Merchant – Division 1, Des Thornett – Div 2 and Sue Davies – Division 3. The Nearest the Pin on the 8th saw Linda Trusler win the only ball with the Drive and Pitch on the 17th taken out by Peta Merchant, Nancye Massingham and Di Pritchard in their respective divisions Next week is Friendship Day and it is a shotgun start at 8.30am.
