All Shoalhaven councillors present at last night’s ordinary meeting, except for Cr John Levett, voted in favour of revamping the area.
The extensive revamp will include upgrades to the Basin Walking track and the construction of a boardwalk, three new BBQ shelters and clearing of a seaweed pile that has been dumped at Palm Beach, removal of overgrown foliage and safety upgrades to the stairs at Ray Brooks Reserve, and a safety audit of vegetation at Sanctuary Point beaches, that may prevent adults from supervising children who are swimming.
“Palm Beach needs more than a face-lift, it needs a complete makeover,” Cr Bob Proudfoot said.
“I am calling for greater access and inclusion for all.”
A number of dangerous intersections will prioritised in future budgets.
A roundabout will be constructed on the corner of Sanctuary Point Road, Larmer Ave and Paradise Beach Road.
Traffic calming measures will be implemented on Larmer Ave, on the approach to the Cockrow Creek bridge.
Local residents are adamant that cars, garbage trucks and delivery wagons are speeding across the bridge at 80km/hour, with noise levels intolerable and the risk of accidents high.
Councillors have pushed for urgent road maintenance works on The Park Drive, Sanctuary Point, in particular from Larmer Ave to Boronia Ave, and Boronia Ave itself.
The news will be welcomed by community member Dennis Williams, who made a deputation to council a week earlier.
His deputation centred around Palm Beach, the need for better facilities there, and the desire to have it recognised as “the iconic beach that it is”.
Cr Patricia White said it was high time the matter was addressed.
“We stood here three years ago and had the same debate,” she said.
“If we’re going to tidy it up, we need to continue tidying it up.”
