Emergency services were called to Berry Train Station at about 3.20pm, where they found the train about 150 metres south of the platform at a stand still stuck in a siding.
The incident is thought to be caused by an unspecified mechanical fault.
Wollongong passenger Parnell West, was making his way to the University of Wollongong when the incident occurred.
“I’m housesitting in Nowra at the moment and I was on my way to uni today,” he said.
“The train pulled in to allow another train to go by and they couldn’t connect it back to the main rail.
“We were stuck there for about half-an-hour, and then they let us off the train, escorted us here and called a taxi to uni, a bloke over there is going to the airport, so he might have to get a taxi all the way there.
“I’ll still get there on time and in style – a taxi straight to the uni.”
A replacement bus has been provided to take passengers from Bomaderry to Kiama.
