The hope is to start a conversation with Gilmore MP Ann Sudmalis about how the government can better support childcare workers, who are paid around half of the national median income.
“It’s really quite low considering all the qualifications we need,” Cullunghutti acting director April Evans said.
The skills required on the job are extensive and diverse.
“An average day can range from helping families to diagnose their children, early intervention, helping families in crisis, supporting a child who’s a victim of trauma, supporting children who do have additional needs, supporting children to learn and grow into children who are ready for big school,” she said.
“There is a high attrition rate, it’s hard to put yourself on the line physically, emotionally and mentally.
“You do ask yourself, why do I do this, I could be doing another job for more pay.”
They took their protest to Nowra’s CBD to exert pressure on government.
Childcare workers held up signs – honk for equal pay – and drivers honked loudly as they cruised past the picket.
Mrs Sudmalis was in parliament in Canberra on Tuesday during the protest.
Labor candidate for Gilmore Fiona Phillips joined protesters on Tuesday at South Nowra and in town.
“I think early educators provide the most amazing experience for our young children,” Mrs Phillips said.
“We know they’re not paid very much which is really sad, considering the work they do. Labor is committed to working with early educators, because there’s a glaring difference between what an early educator is paid and a teacher.”
She believes patriarchal values may be to blame.
“Traditionally we see a lot more females involved, and that may have a lot to do with why it’s a lower-paying job,” Mrs Phillips said.
She said a Labor government would lodge a submission to the Fair Work Commission in an effort to increase wages.
