Tomorrow (Thursday, March 29) the students and 14 alpacas start their 2018 Sydney Royal Easter Show campaign.
The Vincentia High alpacas have a tradition of success at the Royal Easter Show and this winning run looks likely to continue.
Only a select few (seven) alpacas will be taken in the ring for judging but the others will be there for “walk and alpaca” which the school has been asked to run this year.
The school’s alpaca coordinator Marion Worthy said the reason why they have had so much success was because they took advice from others.
“To be honest I think is because we listen to everyone who comes along and wants to teach us something new,” she said.
The school’s stud and mentors make sure the school gets quality animals to work with and the group will be up in Sydney until April 2.
The students are looking forward to showing off their much-loved alpacas.
The students are also learning business skills as they, for a fee, walk and clean the pens for the other alpaca owners.
Other breeders, because the Vincentia High students have such a good reputation, ask them to show their alpacas.
“The students’ confidence has built up a lot due to this experience,” Ms Worthy said.
Some of the students are also being groomed to become junior judges.
Ms Worthy said winning awards was not their main goal.
“I expect all my students to do their best,” she said.
“My hope is that we will win but as I said I just want them to do their best.
“The animals can only do their best so the kids can only do their best as well.”
Last year they won the schools’ event and walked away with lots of ribbons.
Six-month-old Norris makes his debut this year.
“He is named after Chuck Norris and if you ever see him come out of the pen you will understand why,” Ms Worthy said. BJ Hawkins has been involved with the alpaca program for four years and loves it.
“It’s a hobby I like doing. I love the animals and they all have their own different personalities and I love each and every one of them,” he said.
“I am so excited about the upcoming Sydney Royal.
“If we win champion school well that would be good but if we don’t we always learn something.”
BJ does not have a favourite alpaca and likes to share the care around and said being part of the alpaca program had given him more self-confidence.
